Katie McKenna
PTV Productions’ Internet Director Katie McKenna has more than a decade of experience producing and directing non-fiction content for film, television, and the web. Specializing in online community-building, Web 2.0. tools and “open” technologies, she’s produced online media from the corporate trenches of JumpTV to the non-profit frontlines of the NDP, FreePress, and DOC, where she served as Communications Director for DOCspace from 2007-08. A bilingual Montrealer, Katie is credited on over a dozen documentary productions, including co-producing The Take (2004) with Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein, and directing The Year Before for the NFB (2007). In 2009, she completed her MSc from the London School of Economics.
Currently, Katie is overseeing development of the interactive component of Inside Disaster, a documentary series following the Red Cross relief effort in Haiti. Katie also led the programming and design of HaitiFixers.com (created by PTV pro bono for colleagues in Haiti), and the new PTV Productions website.
Katie’s Mission Statement:
As a DOC National Board member, Katie aims to assist the organization and its members to understand, negotiate, and thrive in the country’s new landscape of interactive production. Her goal is to further conversation around questions such as: what are best practices for production and distribution in the interactive space? How should we measure the success of our work in this medium? How can the web help filmmakers connect with audiences? Katie also hopes to help the organization expand its membership base, and liaise with younger members.
